“I’m fine!” I said. “Just … excited, that’s all!”

I was lying – I felt awful. Once again, I hadn’t slept a wink all night – and not just because I’d been up late working on the banner. When I had finally gone to bed, I’d spent hours tossing and turning, thinking about Claire’s face when she’d run out of the classroom in tears.

I didn’t know why I felt so guilty – it wasn’t as if Claire had been expelled! She’d just had her classroom monitor badge taken away and been given detention for a few days, that was all. It served her right for trying to steal my prize!

Besides, I couldn’t let my face show my true feelings now. In just a few moments the final part of my plan would be revealed for all to see.

Mr Fortune stepped grandly onto the stage and cleared his throat.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” he began. “Today, New Forest Academy celebrates excellence in all its forms! To start us off, we have something from Duncan. He has designed a special banner to welcome you all!”

Duncan jumped from his seat and raced to a rope at the side of the stage. The banner was still rolled tight above the stage, ready for its big reveal. One tug of the rope would open it up for all to see.

Mr Fortune raised his arms. “Without any further ado – welcome to this year’s prize-giving assembly!”

Duncan pulled on the rope and the banner fell open. As expected, the audience gasped – but it wasn’t a gasp of delight. It was a gasp of horror.

Mr Fortune blinked, no doubt wondering why everyone looked so shocked. He gazed up at the banner … and a horrified gurgle escaped his throat. The banner didn’t say “New Forest Academy Celebrates Excellence”. Instead it said: “Mr Fortune Snogged a Dog!!!”
